  3. Driving with an
  4. automatic
  5. transmission is
  6. easier than driving
  7. with a manual
  8. transmission
  9. because the
  10. automatic
  11. transmission shifts
  12. your car's gears by
  13. itself.  There is
  14. no need for a
  15. clutch pedal or
  16. gear shift lever. 
  17. An automatic
  18. transmission can
  19. sense the change in
  20. the car's speed,
  21. the load on the
  22. engine, the
  23. position of the
  24. throttle, as well
  25. as how far down you
  26. have pushed on the
  27. gas pedal.  It
  28. "automatically"
  29. shifts gears
  30. accordingly. 
  31. Automatic
  32. transmissions have
  33. been in use since
  34. 1939. 
  35.  
  36. Oil pressure runs
  37. the automatic
  38. transmission, and
  39. shift valves
  40. control the gear
  41. changes.  All of
  42. this is determined
  43. by a device called
  44. a governor which
  45. determines the
  46. shifting of gears. 
  47. Basically, the
  48. governor controls
  49. the oil supply,
  50. under varying
  51. pressures, that
  52. travels to the
  53. shift valves.

  55. Gear shifting works
  56. in the following
  57. way.  The drive
  58. shaft that turns
  59. the wheels also
  60. simultaneously
  61. turns the governor. 
  62. As the car goes
  63. faster, the
  64. governor turns
  65. faster.  The
  66. governor sends oil
  67. to the shift valves
  68. via centrifugal
  69. force.  As the
  70. shift valves move
  71. out, they transmit
  72. the oil to the gear
  73. shifting devices in
  74. the automatic
  75. transmission. 
  76. Slowing down causes
  77. the shift valves to
  78. move in, which
  79. sends the oil in
  80. the opposite
  81. direction. 
  82. Different gears are
  83. chosen by routing
  84. the pressure to
  85. both the brake
  86. bands and the
  87. clutch.
